Reitarska

History

Reitarska's line dates back to at least the 11th century, when a road here formed part of Yaroslav's walled city and led toward the northern gate. The name appeared in the 17th century, when a regiment of cavalry called reiters was stationed here. The current built fabric is dominated by late 19th and early 20th-century apartment houses — firmly tsarist and pre-revolutionary in character, with eclectic historicist facades throughout. The Renaissance Revival revenue house at No. 9 was designed by architect Aleksander Shile and became home to composer Mykola Lysenko between 1888 and 1894. The 1914 medical centre at No. 22 was built in a Venetian Gothic idiom, with pointed arches often described as having a twin in Madrid. A circular Soviet modernist building at No. 15 was reimagined in 2020 as Reytarska Circle — one of Kyiv's most talked-about openings of that year.

Character

Reitarska is one of the most distinctive streets in central Kyiv — a three-block stretch in the old city, a few minutes' walk from the Golden Gate and St Sophia's Cathedral. Locals describe it as cozy and quiet with a slow-paced rhythm, yet it evolved in the 2010s into one of the city's most popular going-out streets, mixing historic buildings with third-wave coffee shops, natural-wine bars, concept stores and contemporary art spaces. The resident mix runs from diplomats and NGO workers — drawn by the Hungarian Embassy at No. 33 and French Consulate at No. 39 — to artists, curators and creative professionals anchored around The Naked Room gallery and Reytarska Circle. Narrower and more intimate than neighbouring Yaroslaviv Val, Reitarska has fewer through-cars and more internal courtyards. Mornings and afternoons skew café- and gallery-oriented; evenings bring a denser bar and restaurant crowd.

Raven Backyard

A colony of ravens has lived in this courtyard since the early 1990s, established and named by local residents. Behind the Renaissance Revival revenue house where composer Mykola Lysenko lived from 1888 to 1894. One of Kyiv's most quietly famous urban secrets.

Why invest here

Rental demand is driven by several overlapping segments. The diplomatic community is unusually concentrated here — the Hungarian Embassy is at No. 33, the French Consulate at No. 39, with the Austrian and Canadian embassies one block away. This brings in diplomatic staff, international consultants and NGO workers who want to live near their institutions. The creative class follows — artists, designers and media professionals drawn to The Naked Room, Reytarska Circle and the concentration of independent venues. For expats and young professionals, walkability to Kyiv's best bars and cafes is a significant amenity. For tenants who specifically seek old Kyiv character — the Raven Backyard, the 1914 Gothic building, the pink house — this street offers something newer districts cannot replicate: an urban environment with genuine history and idiosyncrasy.
